High Peak CWC February 2005
It's been a bit wild here at Rusty's Ranch for the past few weeks. First there was a family Christening and then Rusty caught some 'flu' type virus, but he's more or less better
now so things are getting back to normal. Result - I can get round to writing my February report for the High Peak CWC, so here it is!
We got a really pleasant surprise at the first meeting of the CWC at Sterndale Moor. Who should come to sing to us but Johnny Holland again? Apparently the engaged artist was ill
and Johnny was free. It was exactly a month ago that he came to sing to us for the first time - but as far as I'm concerned he can come any time he likes.
With him were his wife Susie and her friend who joined in enthusiastically with the dancing. Apparently she really likes California Blue. The song I liked best was 'Amazed by You'
which Johnny executed with all sorts of fantastic sound effects.
Johnny likes an audience that's smiling and isn't too quiet, so the High Peak CWC is just the right place for him.
The noise level went up significantly during the shoot-out thanks to the Preacher and his gang of cheerleading children. I think he'd been coaching them beforehand. Suffice
it to say that the discipline for the fast-draw was 'High Peak Twist' (don't ask!) and Curly was 3rd, Kalamitty 2nd and Frosty 1st.
The artist the next Saturday, the 12th, was Dave West Jnr. from Leeds. This was at the 'Waterloo.' He was amazingly tall and dressed all in black from his hat to his boots. His
repertoire was unusual but cheerful. Any songs that people couldn't dance to they could clap to, and there was certainly a whole lot of clapping going on.
We revisited songs and dances we hadn't heard for ages. Some songs we hadn't heard before at all. I see I've noted down 'Hotter Than a Two Dollar Pistol', 'Bad News' and 'One
Round With Jose Quervo.' A song I was pleased to hear was 'Take a Breather' which I haven't heard sung live before, and I can do the dance!
By the end of the evening Dave had really got into his stride and so he sang 'The Trilogy' as well.
In the fast-draw Sundown was third, Crazy-Legs 2nd and Rusty!! 1st. I can't remember what the discipline was, but I suspect 'Thumb Bust'.
On the 19th the artist was Bob McKinlay and I was really sick to miss it. Rusty took notes for me. He said that Bob was on really good form and everybody had a great time.
Apparently the audience was supportively vocal as he sang some of his trade mark songs like 'It's Good To Know You', 'Restless' and 'My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You' and others whose titles I didn't recognise.
For his third spot Bob sang some well known Rockabilly songs including 'Hello Marylou', 'Singin' the Blues' and 'The Wonder Of You' - this last with audience participation
of the enthusiastic rather than tuneful variety. Wish I'd been there!
Both Rusty and I missed the last meeting of the month, and so I'll try to give you some info. about it next month.
So long for now,
Mrs. Rusty
