  High Peak CWC January 2005

Hi there, folks! So we've got to the end of January, and what an amazing month it's been as regards quality acts.

First up was Johnny Holland on the 8th at the 'Waterloo'. I could tell he was a real pro because he managed a great pose whenever I took a photograph of him even though he was in full flow. His stance while singing was that of the best rock singers.

In looks he was a rangy figure with long grey hair, somewhat reminiscent of Buffalo Bill. He was dressed stylishly from his hat to his boots.

Johnny sang a lot of the best Country songs with 'oomph' and action, amongst them being 'God Bless Texas', 'There's a Bad Moon On The Rise' and 'There Ain't No Way To Hide Your Lyin' Eyes.' I liked he way he identified the titles of all his songs and who was best known for singing them

The High Peak CWC is known for banter, and Johnny joined in wholeheartedly. I did however feel sorry for the lady dancer whom he described as getting onto the floor 'like a rat out of a trap'. When he followed this up by saying that he could tell she was 'up for it' he only made matters worse!

However he did put things right by apologising at the end and giving her a kiss. We're glad that he didn't take his mother's advice and get a proper job!

First in the Fast Draw was Bronco, and second was Frosty. The discipline was freestyle.

The next Saturday was our Second Anniversary. For this we were at Sterndale Moor.

The singer was Natalie Diamond. She wore three different outfits, one for each spot, and they were all stunning. As she had no instrument she was able to move to the music as well as sing expressively.

She sang songs from across the board, including several by the best-known female Country singers. Some of the songs I'd never come across before, such as 'Three Wooden Crosses', Merle Haggard's 'Back In Love By Monday' and Garth Brookes' 'The River.'

During the Fast Draw there was a gun check. The winners were first Bounty Hunter, second Sundown and third Crazy-Legs Fred. This time the discipline was long arm.

On 22nd January we were back at the 'Waterloo' where we celebrated Buckshot's birthday. The artist was the inimitable B.J.Locklin. He is a little Scottish singer with a big personality.

His guitar is wired in such a way that he is able to wander around the room, terrorising the dancers and performing little dances of his own. At one point he got in the way of the hoe-down, Rusty nearly grabbed his guitar instead of my hand, and then B.J. almost got trampled underfoot. He must like living dangerously!

On this occasion our singer was speaking very slowly so that we could understand him – almost. However he still sings in English. I think his most amazing renditions were of 'Ghost Riders In The Sky', 'Copperhead Road' and 'The Thunder Rolls' when he used nearly the whole floor, dancing like a dervish and howling like a caged wolf.

B.J. sang two of his own songs, 'Saturdays and Holidays', and 'Home Time.' I particularly liked the latter which was very catchy. The dancers executed the 'Tush Push' to it.

In the Fast Draw the discipline was the cavalry twist. Sundown came first and Frosty second.

Unfortunately I missed the last Saturday of the month as I was baby-sitting. I gather I wasn't the only one away, so I hope the club will be back to strength in February.

The meeting place on the 29th was Sterndale Moor and the artist was Country Code. Rusty tells me that he was a personable young man who sang well. Amongst his songs were 'Tall Tall Trees', 'Much Too Young' and 'Long Time Forgotten.'

The dancers would have had a really good night, had there been more there. Country Code joined in with 'Back Tracking' and 'One Step Forward' to encourage those who were there.

Looking forward to seeing you all again. Anyone who reads this who hasn't been to visit us yet – don't forget to check where we are on this site and give us a try. You'll be warmly welcomed!

     So long,
