High Peak CWC Website Report For July
Hi there! Here we are with the July happenings at High Peak CWC.
What a period of downs and ups!
We started on a down as the members of High Peak CWC were mourning the loss of our late Chairman, Sundown. However, the club
gave him a good send off during the evening of the 2nd July when there was a minute's silence followed by a champagne toast in his memory.
We listened and danced to one of his favourite songs, 'Loving You Makes Me a Better Man', and there was a four shot salute
after the Trilogy, the last being for 'our good friend, Sundown'.
Keith Shepherd, who stood in at the last minute for Billy Cody, sang for us. Keith has a pleasant voice and he does put a lot
of effort into his programme. Most of his songs tell a story, and I like story songs.
As I was in the kitchen concocting pork sandwiches with Westie I missed two thirds of the programme, but have noted a couple
of nostalgic songs, 'Yesterday Just Passed My Way Again' and 'Pardon Me If I'm Sentimental When You Say Goodbye'.
Sundown's funeral took place the following Monday, and there is an account of this elsewhere on the website.
The next Saturday I really thought I'd gone back in time when I clapped eyes on 'Drifter'. It was all there, the greased
shaped hair and the DA, and the big guitar. Had we returned to the 50s? (Not that I remember them, of course!)
Apparently we hadn't entered a time warp. This singer from South Derbyshire is 'into' the old days - his name comes from one
of Hank Williams' nicknames. It wasn't a surprise to learn that he also does Buddy Holly tribute nights – just change the glasses and 'Hey Presto!'
He also likes Raymond Frogatt – witness the frogs all around the stage. (soft toys, not actual) Drifter gives all his songs a
'feel' of the 50s, and he also threw in a few questions about the songs and singers that had me floored.
But we were now on our way up.
Our next Saturday night was on July 23rd when the artist was that all-round entertainer Alan Cameron. He writes his own songs, he sings, he tells jokes, he's witty and he's from Yorkshire! What more could we want?
I bought one of his CDs, (Yes his singing was that good!) and he kindly let me have it at the knockdown price of £10, instead
of the £100 he originally asked. (Certainly, 'How much?!')
It was a night to bring out all our 'Alan Cameron' dolls. At one point they sat by the stage and sang for Alan while a
life-size 'doll' cavorted in a chair wearing Alan's 'Yorkshire Stetson' (flat 'at). A pity that Alan was trying to sing at the time!
We finished the month off with Ivor James on the 30th July. We've had Ivor to sing to us before and I love that black treacle voice with a hint of gravel.
The dancers all took to the floor, or if you're Westie, were on the floor, thanks to Kalamitty's enthusiastic dancing. I think
I saw Kalamitty and Frosty dancing together at one point! You never know what's going to happen at the High Peak CWC! I see one of Ivor's songs was 'You're The Reason I Can't Sleep At Night', which seems highly
appropriate.
Ivor obviously didn't want to be outdone by Alan Cameron and so he told us some horrendous jokes, which were only funny
because of their awfulness.
And so we ended the month on a high note, with lots of people present and everyone in a good mood.
The places in the fast draw have been:
2nd July - 3rd Crazy Legs, 2nd Curly, 1st Frosty.
9th July – 3rd Crazy Legs, 2nd Curly, 1st Frosty.
23rd July – 3rd Westie, 2nd Rusty, 1st Frosty.
30th July – 3rd Rusty, 2nd Bronco, 1st Curly.
We could do with a few more contenders in the fast draw, so if you fancy your chances in this department and would like to amass
some trophies, do come and join us.
In fact, if you like anything on the Western or Line Dance scene, you're more than welcome to join us. The programme and the maps
are all on this website.
So long till next month,
Mrs Rusty.
