            High Peak CWC March 2005

Well, here's the High Peak CWC report for March, which actually starts with a brief report on Brian Mirza's visit on the last Saturday evening in February.

Brian apparently performed excellently. We were lucky to get him because he had been going a few weeks but he played good Country music.

Unfortunately both Rusty and I missed the first meeting of the club in March, as Rusty still had 'flu, but so did the artist who got lost on the way. Once again I would recommend our map on this website!

On the 11th March our club meet took place at Sterndale Moor Social Club and the artist was Dick Ryman. He arrived dressed in black and had that easy going laid back style of many of the best Country singers. In fact he came across as an all round nice guy.

It was quite an exciting evening as it was Norah, Preacher's mother's, birthday and she had provided a wonderful buffet for the whole club to thank the members for their friendliness. We also sang 'Happy Birthday' for Chantilly and Chris.

Preacher and his attractive girlfriend Mandy were also celebrating their engagement. It was perhaps unkind of Sundown to suggest that there should be a collection for a pram! (As you probably know there is a lot of banter at the High Peak!)

Dick was quite happy for those who weren't dancing to join in with the singing. At one point, as the dancers performed in a group, (once they'd sorted out the directions they were moving in), everybody sang with feeling 'It's a Fine Time To Leave Me Lucille.'

Amazingly not put off by the sound, Dick suggested community singing at other times! He sang a lot of well-known songs including 'Crystal Chandeliers' which the dancers performed with their usual lack of precision.

The discipline for the fast draw was 'long arm.' Moonshiner came 3rd, Curly 2nd and Bronco 1st. Rusty was presented with a certificate to prove that he was no longer one of the 'Dead Men Walking' fraternity having won the fast draw one week.

On the 18th the club gathered at the 'Waterloo.' This time it was Maverick's 70th birthday. We do seem to celebrate an awful lot!

The artist was Steve Chase who sings well and goes in for lots of jolly, foot-tapping tunes. He also endeared himself to the audience by joining in with the banter. Crazy Legs lost his belt while dancing, but fortunately not his trousers.

Kalamitty was away and so Buckshot was the DJ. He tried to curry favour with those present by wearing a Kalamitty mask, but no one was fooled – especially when he tried wearing it in a rather unconventional place.

Steve sang a lot of songs that I didn't recognise but fortunately Crazy Legs was on hand to supply the titles. One that I worked out for myself was 'If Dallas was in Tennessee, then there was George Strait's 'Got Some Oceanfront Property In Arizona' and the even more catchy 'It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long.' (At least that's what it sounded like.)

The fast draw was 'cavalry twist', the winners being Sundown, Bronco and a newcomer, Buck. Unfortunately I forgot to note which order they came in. It was just one of those nights – as Chantilly will vouch.

We then looked forward to the Easter Weekend with mounting anticipation, so if you want to know more about March click onto the Easter Weekend report.

 Ciao.
