Website Report For November
Well, Hi here once again. November has come and gone and we are still having a good time.
We didn't have a bonfire on November 5th, but we did have Gary Haynes come to sing for us. Gary was young (to me
anyway!) and good-looking and he sang with boyish enthusiasm – in fact a regular clean-cut guy. His last song, 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy' seemed very apt.
He sang an amazing number of songs in the time allowed and there was a lot of dancing going on. He also sang some of his own
songs which were very pleasant. One of them, 'Standing In The Pouring Rain' had particularly good beat.
I think that it was on this evening hat we first noticed that Westie had hurt her ankle, since it was suggested that there
should be a 'stamper' for her in the Fast Draw. (Westie tends to stamp her foot to make her gun go off!)
The next week it was our DJ Kalamitty's 50th Birthday. He was so excited by this that he gave a buffet for the members of club – thanks Kalamitty, it was great. We all had a great time, largely due to our guest artist, Johnny Holland who really entered into the spirit of the evening and gave us a swell performance, managing to ignore all the 'high jinks' that were taking place.
I think the song typifying Johnny Holland was Dire Strait's song which includes the line 'He's got the action, he's got the
motion'!
That evening I felt like I was on the set of a cowboy movie as there were so many Western characters wandering around. It was
Maverick's birthday as well and he was dressed really smartly in a 19th century style suit including fancy waistcoat.
Unfortunately I was missing the next Saturday evening, the 19th, and so I missed Kris Davis from Burnley.
Apparently he was really great and indulged in banter as well, something our club is noted for! (If you've been you'll understand what I'm saying.)
I notice that Rusty's written down that he sang 'For Ever and Ever Amen' which he hadn't sung for three years, and 'One More
Last Chance' and 'Why Me?' that I didn't recognise.
Unfortunately there weren't many there that evening, but all those present felt like they'd been at a party, the atmosphere
was so good!
The next week I was back to hear Brian Mirza at Sterndale moor Social Club. There were loads of other people back too.
Brian belonged to 'Saddle Tramp' and 'Saddle tramp Revival' when he played with Big Jim Reynolds and what can I say? He's
professional and he's good. It's no wonder that his CDs were selling like hot cakes!
Brian is also a dab hand at telling truly awful, toe curlingly terrible jokes. There was a lot of groaning from the floor!
Then he asked us if we believed in Santa. Well, we had to say yes seeing that Santa, one of our members, was with us that night.
He then went on to prepare us for Christmas by singing 'O, Santa Claus I still Believe in You' from his CD 'A Happy Christmas From
the Mirza Family.'
So that's where we're up to. Christmas is on its way and we're looking forward to having an even better time in December.
Also, we're hoping to see Westie, whose ankle got worse, and Crazy Legs Fred, back with us again. We certainly miss Westie's female
presence in the Fast Draw (and the stamping!) and Crazy Legs from the Fast Draw and from the dance floor. It certainly seems empty when he and Lyn aren't executing a partner dance around the edge!
So – Merry Christmas everyone! I'll be back writing a report in the New Year, and letting you know more of the happenings at High
Country and Western Club.
So long,
Mrs Rusty.
