Website Report For October 05

Hi there!

Here at the High Peak we've had a really great October. Things just seem to be getting better and better. The atmosphere is really great, the acts are swell, the audiences are fantastic …what more can we want?

So, let's get down to what's been going on.

The month started on Saturday 1st at Sterndale Moor. Yours truly was in the kitchen concocting chilli con carne and so missed most of the evening, but everybody said they're had a good time. The artist was Grandpa T. Smith, a really great guy who soon had the dancers on their feet.

He'd brought his old lady with him and as it was her birthday we were able to sing for her. Grandpa T. asked if it was in 'reet key' and it occurred to me that he might be from Yorkshire! He also wanted to be the first to wish us 'Merry Xmas'. Well, he was!

On the 8th we were at the 'Waterloo', Taddington. The artist this time was Billy Cody. I should have realised we'd got a comedian when he tested the microphone with some heavy breathing.

Actually Billy is a really good singer, and he's a dab hand at being Roy Orbison, complete with guitar, sunglasses and special singing effects. So we had 'Crying Over You ', 'Blue Bayou' and Gene Pitney's '24 Hours To Tolsar' as well as some of the more usual songs.

While he sang he performed some unusual actions, like dusting the lights, and trying to galvanise Joan, sitting next to me, firstly into singing with him, and then by presenting her with a plastic bouquet from the bar. Groovy or what?

On the 15th we should have been entertained by Richie Gale, but he was unable to come so we had our old (Well, actually, young) friend Darren Jones back with us at Sterndale Moor.

Darren, being young and having bags of energy, always sings loads of songs. Amongst those I didn't recognise, but enjoyed anyway, were 'What You Gonna Do With a Cowboy?' 'Three Rounds With Jose Quervo' and 'That's The Truth About Men'. He also sang his distinctive action song 'The Drinking Bone.'

Mule was with us on this occasion and he wandered around dressed all in black looking for all the world like Desperate Dan with attitude.

On October 22nd we were back again at the 'Waterloo' with Steve Chase as the performer. Steve reminded me of the singing cowboys of my childhood who sang with a smile as they strummed on their guitars.

We were especially pleased as it had been Barbara's birthday the day before and she came to see us accompanied by two of her family. She also shared two cakes with us, which was very kind.

The Fast Draw was a very quiet affair as Preacher wasn't with us, and no one else can really take his place, although there were a few "we're ready"s as one or two people tried to imitate his voice.

For the last meeting of October we were back at Sterndale Moor. We were pleased that the duo Jack of Diamonds came, as they had had some difficulty locating the building. (Do look at the map on our website if you want to visit us.)

The duo's programme was made up of line dance songs, which seemed to please everybody. Not that our members can't dance to just about anything!

It being nearly Halloween a couple of weird shapeless figures with glittering eyes joined the dancers. Then, for the Fast Draw, a whole host of weirdo cowboys with spooky faces appeared and shot at each other. Near the end they conga'd off through the door to 'The Monster Mash', but unfortunately managed to get back in again.

The discipline had been the 'coffin draw' (as you'd expect) but there were no awards given as nobody knew who anybody was, and they'd all been cheating anyway. The only one who'd been in any way normal was Preacher, the marshal, who was looking very smart in his musketeer-style hat.

The Trilogies were video'd for a sick boy in hospital and I was pleased to note that Captain Rusty Spoone was word perfect.

So that was October. Talk to you again in a month's time.

 So long for now!
