October 06 Report For Website
Hi there!
October's finished and boy have we had a great time! What a fantastic atmosphere we've been having at Rebels Retreat, and we'd
really like to thank all the people who've been supporting the club.
Of course we have to thank all the artists too, and Bronco and Jackie who've booked such a varied selection.
First up was Jack Glass on October 7th. Jack is an old pro, (Long lasting rather than aged), who sings in a relaxed manner.
His craggy face inspires confidence and his songs are great for line dancing. Jack sang loads of songs, but this may be because the DJ, Preacher, had disappeared from view, and so when he sang 'This Is Where the
Cowboy Rides Away' it may have been a hint fort Preacher to come back!
The next Saturday we were lucky to get a visit from Kim Carson from the USA and her three backing singers/musicians. I'd been
really looking forward to this Saturday evening but unfortunately couldn't go at the last minute. However I've heard some really rave reports about the ability of the musicians and Rusty brought home a CD of Kim
Carson singing at Tipitina's in New Orleans which I've really enjoyed listening to - she sounds like a true female Country singer, changing her voice to reflect the mood of each song..
Several of Kim's songs were new to us, such as 'Whiskey River', 'Honky Tonk Girl' and 'I Only Like You When I'm Drinking', the
latter two being self-penned.
Rusty tells me that one of the highlights of the evening was during Gram Parsons' 'Hickory Wing' when Neils took lead vocals
and Kim sang in harmony.
Kim was accompanied by a backing group of very talented musicians - Mary Lasseigne from New Orleans on base guitar, Nancy Buchan
from Costa Rica on the fiddle, and Neils Kaiser from Freiburg, Germany on lead guitar
The night was made even more special by the buffet that Preacher, our DJ, had asked Alison to put on for the birthday of his
fiancée, Mandy. All in all, I'm told, it was a great night.
The next weekend some of our good friends from Lichfield arrived to join in the fun. The singer on Friday night was Dave
Patrick with his keyboard and guitar, who kept the dancers on their toes with his fancy medleys, The cabaret, however, were definitely the Lichfielders, a couple of whom did some amazing things with balloons!
On Saturday the group Palomino arrived with all their equipment and soundman. Palomino is a group of four, the main
singer being David Giles, who has a really impressive presence.
Everyone enthused about the evening, and I particularly enjoyed the songs where David was able to use his voice for
different effects. There were also opportunities for his backing group to show their ability with their particular instruments, as there had been with Kim Carson's group.
The last artist of October was BJ Locklin. We're all crazy about BJ because he's such a one off. He leaps about like a
demented flea, behaves in a really sassy way and sings and plays really well. I'm amazed how well he articulates the words
of his songs, his Scottishness giving them an interesting edge – as opposed to when he talks when he just sounds Scottish!
Even though he's always rude about the line dancers we know he's only joking – I think!
This month Becky of Sterndale Moor Social Club has been doing a wonderful job providing food during the Saturday
evenings, apart from when Alison did a great job for Mandy's buffet. Trust me to miss it!
The committee of Rebels Retreat of course does a great job, giving the impression that the club runs itself! Which is as it
should be.
Talk to y'all again next month!
Ciao!
Mrs Rusty
