Website Report For July 06
Hi there! So here are Rusty and I back in sunny Derbyshire and no longer bowling along the roads of Arizona and Utah listening
to songs like 'I'm Not The Man I Once Was' and 'Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,' (songs we'd already heard at Rebels Retreat thanks to Alan Westwood) and sometimes Navajo chants.
The last Saturday before we went to the U.S., the 3rd June, the act at Sterndale Moor was Dean Austin. Dean is a brilliant player and singer, and he has great backing tracks and so, of course, we had a fantastic night.
I've noted that a lot of his songs had a really god beat. Several of them I didn't recognise, such as 'Ringling, Ringling,'
'The Whole Room Shines' and 'It's All Down To the Power Of Positive Drinking.' I did recognise Roy Rogers 'When It's Springtime In the Rockies,' although I hadn't heard it recently!
It was on this evening that the Westerners decided to initiate their newest recruit, Jessie James Junior, by changing his
trainers for Western boots.
Rusty and I were then missing for four weeks. However the report was that everything went well, thanks to Preacher and the
rest of the committee, helped by Frosty, Lyn and Crazylegs.
The first singer on our return was Pete Jones on 8th July. Unfortunately I unable to attend but Rusty reports that Pete was a good entertainer and that everybody enjoyed themselves.
The next week there was no club, as it would have clashed with the Welshpool event. However Bronco, our Bookings Secretary,
was involved with organising a charity event at Alderley Edge to which our members were invited. Apparently there was line dancing and a Fast Draw. Our own DJ, Preacher, was the DJ at the Event.
Apparently £5,000 was raised for charity – very well done!
The artist on 22nd July was Stu Peters. He's a really jolly entertainer and everybody warms to him immediately.
He produced some really great medleys – pause before you start dancing as you may be on the floor longer than you think (!) – and
introduced some fancy instrumental pieces into the musical arrangements of his songs. The result was a great evening.
We now come to the last Saturday in July when our artist was Jonny Gold. Jonny was new to us but he immediately took our
attention with his fancy jackets – one blue one emerald green – and his decorated black shirt.
Jonny was a good entertainer for both line dancers and listeners, which was just as well, as we were a bit light on dancers
and no one took up his offer of a brisk hoedown. At the end of the evening everyone said how much they had enjoyed themselves.
When we came back from holiday we were sad to hear that on one occasion there had been five shots after the American Trilogy.
Unfortunately Dolly's John had passed away, and also a young man associated with Sterndale Moor Club had been killed in a car accident.
There have been collections in memory of John and the young man and £30 has been donated to St Oswald's League of Friends, a
cancer charity, and £33 has been donated to the Air Ambulance.
We were really pleased to see Dolly with us on 29th as she and John have been very staunch supporters of the club.
The Fast Draw is still carrying on. With Chantilly and Lyn away on this last Saturday I had four names and worked out a
complicated list where everybody would shoot at everybody else. At the last minute Preacher decided to join in and I had to work out an ever more complicated procedure.
And Preacher was the winner!
Thanks are due to Alison who keeps on doing the catering with great results. She even provided sandwiches and strawberries and
cream last Saturday when she had to be elsewhere!
So, thank you to all our trusty workers.
