                   Website Report For September

Hi There! Well, September's come and gone and what a swell time we've had. First act up was Ian Carter on the 2nd. What a fantastic instrumentalist he is - and such a sartorial dresser too.

He did loads of numbers suitable for dancing, and some I didn't know, like 'Smoke Rings In The Dark' and 'Everyone's Waiting For The Next Bad Thing.'

It was on this evening that Don Keyworth came to invite the gunslingers to put on a show at a themed 'Wild West Night' at Peak Gateway Caravan Park on 16th, but more of that later on.

The artist on the next Saturday evening was Mike Daley. Unfortunately I missed it, being on babysitting duty in South Wales, but Rusty assures me that everyone had a great time. His notes tell me that Mike played lead guitar with a piano effect - great!

Looking through the programme of songs I see plenty I know, and several I don't, like 'You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone' and Travis Tritt's 'Put Some Drive In Your Country.'

The next Saturday, the 16th, a gang of us was off to Peak Gateway Caravan Park to support the gunslingers.

Don Keyworth's Top Country Sounds (a five piece group) were on stage and Mad Melvin was running the disco.

We danced amongst the straw bales, and then Frosty and some of the gunslingers arrested and tried one of the bar staff. Well, you don't get away with the wrong footwear while they're around. You just get an unfair trial at a kangaroo court and then 'shot.'

The Fast draw took place, with Bronco being the winner. (I think he's been getting some practice in as he's been quite sharp of late.) Then a few Fast Draw 'virgins' took part in the challenges, giving them a taste of what being a gunslinger is all about.

Everyone seemed to be having a good time, especially Santa, who was seen executing a rather jolly dance. Maybe he thought it was Christmas!

On the 23rd we were back at Sterndale Moor Social Club for John Aston from Doncaster. (All our regular meetings are at Sterndale Moor these days - look elsewhere on this website for details on how to get there.)

John Aston was a really laid back guy with a fine country voice. His programme included lots of interesting songs, including the Western boogie, 'Shotgun Boogie', Merle Haggard's 'Trying Not To Love You' and the Western Swing 'Back In The Swing Of Things.'

I'm not saying that John had difficulty locating our club, but he did repeat the quotation, 'If there's another war I'm coming here, because they'll never find me.' (He obviously didn't consult our website map!)

The last artist of the month was Jimmy Alexander, he of the strong singing voice (and Yorkshire accent.) Jimmy's programme didn't always lend itself to dancing, although at the end of the night everybody was up and dancing enthusiastically.

He played the guitar on one occasion and the harmonica on another, but generally he needed his hands free to add gesture and feeling to his songs. At one point he sang 'Achy Breaky Heart' and some Alan Cameron lookalike dolls came out to join him, all singing the same song.

Jimmy sportingly joined in with the Fast Draw, although he does need a bit of practice in this department. David decided to ask for some unconventional Fast Draw styles during the challenges, which had everyone on their toes, or more correctly, on one leg or kneeling on the floor!

So we're all still having a great time at Rebels Retreat. Do come and join us. We're having some really fabulous acts in October including Kim Carson from the US on the 14th and Palomino on the 21st - so do come along.

 See ya!

 Mrs Rusty
