Website Report for January 2006
Hi there! We've had a fun January at High Peak CWC, so here goes!
N.B. Our venue for the whole month was Sterndale Moor Social Club.
On 7th Andy Gates arrived, eventually. Apparently he'd travelled along the M62 and forgotten to turn off – until he'd suddenly found himself in Manchester - fortunately before any of the committee had found themselves cast as substitutes (especially me!).
Andy looked good in his black outfit and sang lots of danceable to songs. Unfortunately he had a sore throat, but that didn't
show in his singing. He started off with 'Small Town Saturday Night', followed with sons like 'Red River Valley' and 'Some Beach, Somewhere,' and ended with 'Louisiana Way'.
Congratulations were given to Curly and Chantilly on the birth of a grandson, Joshua Daniel, a son for their daughter Sarah.
Our next act, on 14th, was Woody, formerly unknown to us, but an absolutely brilliant musician. He started out
dressed as Clint Eastwood in 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' (only the face was different), and ended dressed in denim overalls, a red undershirt and Jack Daniels cap.
He brought a variety of instruments – guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle – and was very proficient in all of them. He started
off with 'Running Bear', played the 'Dukes of Hazzard' theme tune and 'Duelling Banjos' (of course!), and ended with 'Shine On Me O Cajun Moon.'
When he performed 'The Devil Came Down To Georgia' on he fiddle all the ordinary members of Sterndale Moor Club were clustered
around the door, entranced.
On the 21st we had another visit from Donna Wylde, that little singer with the big voice. She puts everything into her songs and certainly gets all the dancers onto the floor.
She started off with 'Mi Vida Loca', (a very suitable song for anyone appearing at High Peak CWC!) sang a wide variety of
songs, including many by women Country singers, and ended with Patsy Cline's 'If You've Got Leavin' On Your Mind.'
On this evening we learnt that one of the members of Sterndale Moor Club, Mark, had been killed in a motorcycle accident, and
so there was a fourth shot included in the American Trilogy.
Our final act of January was Dave West Junior. He was almost completely dressed in black and was impressively tall. He was
also controversial enough to attract the attention of Dolly, (brave man!) but he just managed to get away with it.
He started with 'Sundown in Nashville'; giving me an opportunity to try a dance I hadn't done for some time; went on through
songs like 'I Need a Breather, and 'If Tomorrow Never Comes', and ended with 'A Working Man.'
Some of his songs he sang without playing his guitar, such as 'A Blazing Saddle.' There was lots of dancing, including a
hectic hoedown.
For the time being the Fast Draw Competition has been suspended so that allcomers, especially Fast Draw 'virgins', can have a
go.
High Peak CWC is sad to announce the resignation of Kalamitty as DJ, having given the club sterling service since it started
three years ago. He will now be seen ranging the countryside with Westie on his new Harley Davison.
However, we still have the services of the one and only Preacher, a man who is never at a loss for words, and is always ready
with a quick quip!
So, if you want a Western Saturday night out – with a difference – y'all come to the High Peak Country and Western Club!
Cheers!
Mrs Rusty
