Website Report for November
Hi there! November's come and gone, so let's see what's been happening.
Not a lot at the beginning of the month. Sterndale Moor Social Club held their bonfire on the Friday night, and so it appears
that Preacher and Santa found themselves alone on the Saturday night! (With the CDs, of course!)
But on the 11th everything was back to normal – (or as normal as Rebels Retreat ever is!) The artist was Dave Read, who we remembered visiting us and bringing his daughter along one Roundup. We really took to Dave that time, and so were pleased to see him again. Dave's very laid back and cheerful, and has a really good voice. His songs were very suitable for line dancing and there were lots of couples taking to the floor for partner dances.
During the evening he sang 'Friends in Low Places.' Frosty and Alice gave their own interpretation of the dance, after which
Frosty had to be helped to a stool!
During the interval Preacher played 'Chrystal Chandeliers.' His mother, Nora, always contrives to make this dance hysterically
amusing. There are those who say that she dances like 'a supermarket trolley!' I think she's just trying to lighten the atmosphere.
On the 18th along came Harvey Stevens. He's new to us, but first of all I was taken with his outfit, especially his turquoise shirt, exchanged for a black one later on in the evening. His hat was quite interesting too.
Harvey sang quite a wide range of songs, but his piece de resistance was Freddie Fender's 'Before the Last Teardrop Falls',
which was brilliant. He was also an adept guitar player and added a few impressive twiddles during songs like 'Seven Spanish Angels' and 'Way Down Yonder On the Chattahoochee.'
He and our artist on 25th, Paul Weston, were united in their Preacher baiting. Fortunately Preacher has broad
shoulders, and also knows that it is all in fun. We may take the mickey, but we wouldn't be without him – no one else can DJ like he does – or put up with all the banter.
Paul is another artist who sings well but is pretty good on the guitar accompaniment too. As I have probably written before,
he really shows how much he is enjoying himself and by the end of the evening is 'real gone.'
In his third singing spot he sang several songs that I didn't recognise including 'You Can't Stop a Woman When She's Out Of
Control' and 'We Burn the Roadhouse Down.' wild stuff! He brought Ursula, the line dance teacher, and his wife and 'sound man' along with him. The two ladies enjoyed themselves joining in with the line dancing.
Once again there were weird goings on on the floor as people wound tissues around their fingers, all jealous because one of
our visitors had injured his finger and was wearing a 'fingerbob.'
On a sad note, two of our number have passed away, Eric Teigh and Colin Webster. £40 was collected in memory of Eric for
Cancer Research, and there will be a collection for Colin on another occasion. There was a fourth shot in the Trilogy for each of these good friends.
More cheerfully, it's the Christmas Party on December 9th – bring a plate of food and join in the fun! The results of the Fast Draw will be coming out then, and if you're a fast draw virgin you can join in the 'Virgin's Fast Draw' and try to win the 'Virgin's Cup.' So its all happening at Rebels Retreat.
See yah there!
