Website Report for February 07
Hi there!March has now arrived, and ain't it great now that the sun is shining?
Still, time to go back to February and look over the happenings at Rebels Retreat during that month.
It all started fine and dandy on the 3rd with the arrival of the Mick Ford Duo, all dressed in black and obviously stalwarts of the real Country and Western scene. Mind you, boy, did I have trouble working out the titles of their songs? Not that they weren't good, they sounded just great, it was just that I ain't never heard of those songs before.
The Duo started with, 'A Long Time Gone,' went through songs like 'Way Out Ahead' and 'The Ballad of Ira
Hayes' and ended up doing 'The Trilogy.'
Usually Preacher doesn't play obviously non-Country CDs until after the Trilogy, but on this occasion a visitor requested
a track by the Scissors Sisters, but he made an exception, seein' as it was a visitor.
Come the 10th the snow was all over the side roads, and the car park at Sterndale Moor Social Club. But it takes a lot more'n that to scare some of us, and the police in the car park weren't averse to giving a helping shove. Fortunately the artist, Arizona Wes, came along. Also Preacher, so we had a DJ, Marlene, our Treasurer (so that the artist got paid) and Peter, Rusty and me and Dixie and Stranger (from way over and against Chester) so there was an audience.
Arizona Wes was a real gent from Sheffield. He came in coat tails and staged a blinder of a performance. He even brought along
some props - a Native American war bonnet and a Mexican hat. Wes sang a couple of songs to Dixie, and I've got a great picture of her husband, Stranger, warning him off with an (empty) gun. Amongst songs I
didn't recognise were 'Cherokee Boogie,' 'Who's Cheating You' and 'Tracey Lawrence's 'You're Blowing Me Away Again.'
It was a brilliant night, and some of those in the club next door came along in to help make up the numbers. It was
Rusty's birthday, and so it was real nice to have some good friends to celebrate with. There was even an American Trilogy and a Fast Draw.
On 17th the singer was Mike Daley. Unfortunately yours truly was tied up with the grandkids and so I have to rely on Rusty's notes. So, I learn that Mike was dressed in black with a jacket and hat, had good backing tracks and a rich tenor voice. Sounds pretty good to me. Amongst songs I don't recognise are 'She's All I've Got,' 'Put Some Drive In Your Country' and 'Husbands and Wives.'
The last Saturday in the month was a humdinger. A goodly crowd turned up to hear that fantastic duo, Westride, from
Macclesfield. The female half, Vikki, dressed in Native American gear, does the chat and the singing, and the male half, Rob, does the lead guitar playing and the instrumentals.
Vikki sang with a genuine American accent, and the song 'If You're Lookin' At Me You're Lookin' At
Country,' just fitted the whole night. She even managed variations in her costume, which included a tomahawk, with which she threatened Rob during 'I Swear.' Fortunately he managed to go home with his
neck intact – for now!
The joke that only Jenny's folks are winning the raffle prizes still continues. Michael won the mystery prize, which
turned out to be a brace of racing spiders. I saw them (the spiders) high-tailing it along the floor later in in the evening. Was that before the dance to 'Someone Killed the Spider'?
I reckon I ain't mentioned much about the dancing this month. Well, it's still going on, and how! Crazylegs and Lyn
have taught me and Rusty the couples dance to 'Louisiana Way,' and we've just about got it now.
So, if you want a great night out 'Y'all Come' to Rebels Retreat. We're waitin' to give you real warm welcome.
See ya!
Mrs Rusty
