Website Report For August 07

Hi there!

August at Rebels Retreat turned out just fine, even if the weather outside didn't!

There were plenty of gunslingers having a go in the gunfight, and we collected two virgins, Shorty, who was real young, and Paul, the Maltese Falcon, who came from – you've guessed it – Malta.

There was a lot of photo taking, Paul came for two weeks, and we were really pleased to welcome Paul and his English friends. In fact, we welcomed lots of non-regulars during August which was really good.

I'm not sure how the gunfight stands at the moment, as I was in charge of the scoring, but not being in charge of the forms I didn't actually collate anything! More info next month, I hope.

The raffles went as brilliantly as usual, thanks you to Jenny, even though Preacher is still insisting that it's her relatives who keep winning. (I'm sure she ain't got that many!) Santa still continues to win the rhubarb, and I'm a bit worried about what he's coming down our chimneys with at Christmas.

We still get all different sorts of people to our club, Westerners, line dancers, couples dancers and listeners, and we hope it's gonna stay that way.

Our artist on August 4th was the cheery Phil Steele, who gave us a really good night. His repertoire started with some songs from way back and one I didn't recognise, Randy Travis's 'The Storms Of Life.' In the other two spots Phil took everything up a notch by bringing on stage his young friend Russ, who was an extremely talented lead guitar player.

I was particularly bowled over by their rendition of Bob Dylan's 'Easy Chair,' during which there were some great musical effects. Preacher dubbed the pair, 'Blades of Steel,' and the act was that sharp that it sure was apt.

I also particularly noted their medley based on 'I Saw The Light,' which contained about seven different songs and rendered those dancing 'Walk The Line' even fitter than they had been before!

On 11th August we were visited by Dick Ryman. Dick's programme included songs by all the Country greats – Charlie Pride, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb etc etc and for Charlie McCoy's 'Rolling In My Sweet Baby's Arms' he even produced a harmonica. I noticed he had quite a sense of humour in an understated sort of way, changing the words of one or two songs slightly to make them relevant to us (see, I was paying attention) and asking if we remembered 78 discs – as if!

The next weekend along came Gary Haynes. He lean clean-cut image, and his hat, reminded me of the singing cowboys of my childhood. However he outshone them somewhat because of his musical ability on the swish guitar that he brought along, and on which he did a couple really fancy music only numbers – 'Apache' and 'Ghost riders In The Sky.' He again had a real varied programme, include some songs unknown to me like Merle Haggard's 'Branded Man' and Rock City's 'Sweet As Wine.'

The last weekend in August was the Bank Holiday Roundup, and that'll feature in a separate report.

Meanwhile, thanks for taking the time to read this – hope to see you soon.

 Ciao.
