Website Report for January 07
Hi there, y'all.
January's gone, and we sure did well, despite the time of the winds and the snows. After New Year you might have thought that
there was only one way to go - downhill.
Well, that wasn't entirely true. The party theme continued on into January. Our first artist was Stuart Graham who arrived with
some games to play. Don't know what he looked like, don't know what he played, (Rusty and I were from home), but he sure made a big impression with these games.
Seems Sue and Bronco, and Chris and K2 were wrapping each other in toilet roll paper, Curly and Harley were playing a game
with balls and Preacher was wearing some glasses with funny eyes. Wish I'd been there!
The next week along came Natalie Diamond with her black top, black hat and fawn skirt. I'm sure all the guys find her real
easy on the eye. She's a swell singer too. Close you eyes and you'd think it was Joni Harms or Tammy Wynette or some other famous singer up there on stage, Natalie captures the female 'Country' sound
so well.
Meanwhile on the floor everyone's pulling Jenny's leg that its only her friends and relatives who win the raffle
prizes. But Nora often seems to win, and she's related to Preacher! Hmm. The gunslingers were trying sitting at Jenny's table to win, but it just didn't seem to work. (Jenny runs the raffle, in case you
don't know.)
On the 20th January we were treated to Paul Hill, dressed in black. Paul sang with a rich voice in the midst of clouds of fancy instrumentals. He played the guitar and the fiddle, so at one point it seemed like we were back in the old days as we did the hoe down to a square dance medley. Awesome!
After the Fast Draw presentations, (K2 had won that week, with Bronco runner-up) we found that Bronco had been busy on the
computer again, making 'certificates of excellence' for his fellow Westerners Frosty and Santa. It seems Frosty had proved to be a cowboy exhaust fitter and didn't know how to check if a vehicle had gas,
while Santa had to overcome a lack of knowledge when charging a battery. (Well, his sleigh just don't need no batteries!)
On the last Saturday in January the committee were real worried as to how many people would arrive, but once again people who
weren't expected replaced those we knew weren't coming. The line dancers especially were pleased to see Crazylegs and Madison back with us again, and of course Crazylegs is one of our best gunslingers.
Incidentally, on that Friday night Rusty and me learnt the partner dance to 'Louisiana Way' thanks to this dancing
pair. Preacher's apprentice, Harley, was there too, watching. (At this point I should mention that there's usually a few members at Sterndale Moor on a Friday evening, generally keeping up with the line
and partner dances, and, of course, the bar's always open.)
Back to the Saturday night of the 27th when our artists were the male/female duo Goldstryke. He's big, she's small, he had a coloured shirt, she wore black, he sings tunefully, she has a raw edge to her voice. Chalk and cheese, perhaps, but maybe that's why they sure sound great together.
They included in their programme some songs you wouldn't expect, like Glen Campbell's 'Try a Little Kindness,'
The Carpenters' 'Sweet Sweet Smile' and Hank Williams' 'Hey, Good Lookin'.'
One of our Fast Draw 'virgins,' K2, is really doing well with in the Fast Draw competition, which restarted at the beginning
of January. He has introduced a surprise discipline into the Fast Draw challenges – the 'Stetson Lift' – which has to be seen to be appreciated! Preacher has come back into the competition too, and so we
could see some surprising results this year.
That's all for now.
So long,
Mrs Rusty.
