Report For Website For July 07
Hi there!
July's over, and we've been having a real good time down at Rebels' Retreat.
Preacher's truly back at the helm as chairman and DJ, and he's now turning his hand to using a computer –
something those old cow hands were never faced with! Meanwhile his banter's as good as ever!
We've had some cracking acts this month. First off was Dave Read*, all the way from Blackpool. Dave is just like one of
the family, so we were really pleased to see him. He sang loads of line dance songs, and was cheerful and jolly, as usual.
He brought with him a skyscraper of a friend, Scott, who proved to be no mean Country singer himself as he gave us a few
songs. He then demonstrated his prowess on the dance floor. Scott was second in the Line Dance Championship at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, and he sure had a pair of nifty feet. I should mention that he was real
young, so we oldsters weren't likely to copy his style!
On this, as on every other occasion, Preacher insisted that it was always Jenny's relatives that won the raffle –
even when Jenny was away. In fact one week he swore that one of the winners was Jenny in disguise, checking up to see that everything was being run correctly!
The next week our artist was another cheerful chappie, Paul Hill. Paul was a versatile musician, playing not only the guitar
but also the fiddle and the harmonica. He sang a good spread of songs including 'Turkey In The Straw', which was real old. He played one piece which was just instrumental, but unfortunately I didn't
catch the title.
A few unclaimed raffle prizes from the Air Ambulance Charity Weekend were auctioned off during the evening. In fact the final
total was £1,900+, which was absolutely fabulous considering the weather. (It was the weekend when the whole country was on flood alert!)
A singer that was new to us arrived on 21st , O.J.Reynolds from Skelmersdale. He brought with him his sound engineer, his attractive wife Mel. O.J. was a real class singer, and he introduced me to some songs I sure ain't heard before – 'Blackboard Of My Heart' and 'Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other.' The last was sung because some of our waggish cowboys decided to dance together as a joke. (Photos of this will eventually appear on this website, unless money changes hands!) The rest of his programme was interesting, but perhaps not quite so startling, and his patter showed a good sense of humour.
O.J. was selling discs of his songs in aid of SANDS (Stillbirth And Neonatal Death Society), which is a truly worthwhile
cause, and dear to the hearts of those who have lost children in this way.
Our last artist of the month was the young, good looking Richard Palmer. He is also extremely pleasant and chatty. His
programme included a lot of songs by top of the range artists, including his own, 'Back Together Again,' a pleasing number to which we did a waltz. It was obvious that Richard had the measure of the club
when he ended with 'Best Of Friends', exhorting everyone to get in a circle and kiss each other. I noticed one or two rushing to make sure they were included! Meanwhile Rusty and I joined those doing a
sedate couples dance. It was certainly a night for dancing.
It was great to see everyone getting on so well, and fantastic to receive so many visitors. So, just keep right on coming!
Ciao!
Mrs Rusty
