Website Report For June 07
Hi there!
Well, things seem to have been more of less normal up at Rebels Retreat during June. Preacher was back at as the DJ, and being
loquacious as ever - every raffle prize awarded went to one of Jenny's relatives, and each marshal and gunfighter was immediately ready - at least according to him! Still, we were pleased to see him back.
Rusty and I missed the first Saturday in June, but we were back on the 9th to catch Graham Metcalfe. Graham was a real fine musician and a dab hand at the banjo - he did a particularly fine 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown.' In fact he had an altogether interesting programme, which included a gunfighter ballad, 'Senora's Death Row' and some songs I hadn't heard before, like 'Hearts Are Gonna Roll' and 'Blue Trail of Sorrow.'
On the next Saturday our artist was Poppa J. He had a real easy style of singing and included the name of the best known
singer in the introduction of each song, showing just how knowledgeable he is. His songs were great to dance to, and at one point he had Raindancer (tambourine), Dakota (bells) and Preacher (shaker) joining in with
the accompaniment. Poppa J. also sang the American Trilogy for us, and we managed to move the flags about and do the actions at the right time, quite an achievement!
Then on the 23rd we were entertained by Stuart Graham, a jolly man with some good banter. He noticed K2 and Chris sitting either side of a curtain and made quite a joke of it. Then he tantalised everyone with a bottle of bubbly which he kept never quite awarding. That is until Crazylegs showed his ability to thrust with a ball machine, quite outmatching Rusty on a similar machine, and Preacher with one on his nose. (This has to be seen to be really appreciated or even understood!) Oh yes, and we all enjoyed his singing too, songs like 'There'll Never Be Anyone Else But You' and 'Three Steps To Heaven' taking us right back to our youth.
I must comment on the great friendly atmosphere which was noticeable at the club on these three Saturday evenings - those
three artists were sure friendly guys.
The month ended with a Charity Weekend, when Rebels Retreat joined with Sterndale Moor Social Club (in whose clubhouse we
meet) to put on an event in aid of Air Ambulance.
You can learn all about that in another report. Until then, 'So Long!'
