Rebels Retreat Report For Website October 07

Hi there!

I can't believe that October has gone already but here I am writing another report.

Meanwhile things have been going steadily at Rebels Retreat, 'cos we may not have a shed load of regulars, but but we sure do have a great gang of irregulars who just keep right on coming when they get the chance, and we keep get getting new people too – glad to have you on board guys!

Of course we always have some pretty good acts. This month, October 6th, we started with Billy Stevens, a mighty genial bloke with a flashy white guitar – and a really cute picture of his 32 day old baby! He had a really great line in jokes and chat, and got on just fine with Preacher – well, wouldn't you know it? He did a Western 'Seven Spanish Angels,' complete with the actions, sang a mean unaccompanied by his guitar and he backed his third encore, 'Okie From Muskogie,' with some mighty fine musical effects.

And that night it was Jan from the caravan site's birthday, and Alice presented her with a cake.

Then the next Saturday night, October 13th, we had that guy who just bubbles up with mirth, Stu Peters, who keeps us laughing all night. I guess he goes in for lively songs, and just 'cos he's smilin' it don't mean that he ain't a mighty fine musician. In fact, all night it was just him and the drum machine, sometimes playin' lead guitar and sometimes rhythm, and so we had 'There Goes My Heart,' an 'Irish Stew Medley' (amongst others) and ended with 'Sea Cruise.' In fact, quite a range!

Unfortunately we had news that night that an old friend from Fort Stanley days, Mexiken, had passed away. And so there was a fourth shot after the American Trilogy. The next Wednesday Preacher and Rusty travelled down to the West Midlands to Mexiken's funeral, representing Rebels Retreat and taking appropriate flags with them.

The third Saturday in the month was marked by the arrival of another Northern artist, this time from the North East, Jim Fallon from Washington D.C.(Durham County!) Jim was a real live wire, chatty and cheerful but very organised – even his three singing spots had different themes, and if I hadn't been enjoying myself so much I might even have written down what they were!

He treated us to some songs I hadn't heard before – for instance, 'Wedding Bells' and 'Sing Me Back Home Before I Die' as well as a wide range of catchy songs sung in a gutsy style – from that old favourite 'Running Bear' to the up-to-date, 'Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.'

Unfortunately Rusty and I missed the last Saturday in October, when we had the duo, Natalie Diamond and Tony Dallas. I reckon they went down real well, although the hot news seemed to be that they are getting married next year. Congratulations Natalie and Tony, catch you next time you visit!

On the Fast Draw front Bronco is still Preacher's hero, being out in front in the points, with Frosty in Second place. And of course Jenny's relatives are still winning the raffle prizes. And don't be fooled by Preacher tryin' to pretend that they (the prizes) ain't top class, 'cos they are, and often they're donated by some real kind people – so thanks to them, and all the other often unnoticed supporters of the club who just things going.

Finally, we're planning some interesting moves on the decorating front – seems like Preacher's gang is going to decorate Rebels Retreat's hall, and Jenny and Miss Molly are fixin' to sort out a painted backdrop to the stage.

 Tell you more next month,

 Ciao!

 Mrs Rusty.
