Website Report for September 07
Hi there!
September was a real strange month at Rebels Retreat. Rusty and I kept coming and going, and so we missed quite a lot,
including a visit from Woody and Don, which I gather was awesome, but there you go – family comes first – but then, as Preacher always says, 'We at Rebels Retreat are just one big family, you're
only a stranger the first time you visit.'
Anyway, the artist first up, on September 1st, was Jim Warton, formerly of 'The Fever.' He was a good singer, great
musician, and dressed well. The way he looked and his style of playing took me straight back to the sixties – not that his songs were old. He was right up there with songs like 'If You're Going Through
Hell' and 'Some Beach' along with whole load of Hank Williams' creations like 'There's a Tear in my Beer', 'Hey, Goodlookin'' etc.
Next weekend we were away, unfortunately, so was the artist and many of our members. DJ Preacher kept the whole thing going,
but we hope it won't be happening again. Mind you, those there got half their money back, the rest being reserved for Air Ambulance. (Rebels Retreat and Sterndale Moor Social Club will be having another Charity
Event for Air Ambulance next year.)
We were back on September 15th, and in time to see Pete Jones, who brought his wife along with him. Pete had a deep musical
voice, good musical effects and an unusual programme of songs. Among those I didn't recognise were Raymond Frogatt's 'On The Thirteenth Day Of Summer' and Conley Earl Thomas's 'Somewhere Between
Right And Wrong.'
Then we were off again, missing our good friend Jack Daniels on the Friday 21st, and the spectacular Woody and Don
on Saturday 22nd. I'll have to catch them next time they come around and give them a more detailed write up then.
Our last artist of September was the unique Arizona Wes. He arrived from Sheffield with an assortment of musical instruments
for the audience to try. Alice showed her prowess with the washboard and spoons during 'Louisiana Saturday Night,' but nobody had a go with the shakers.
Wes is a swell entertainer, dressing both as a Native American (for 'Cherokee Boogie') and a Mexican for 'He
Drinks Tequila' (with which he serenaded Alice – it was Alice's lucky night!)
Meanwhile on the committee front Bronco has given notice of his resignation as Bookings Secretary, for family reasons. Thank
you for all your hard work Bronco, and thanks also go to Jackie. Preacher will be responsible for the bookings for the time being, aided by Rusty and in consultation with the rest of the committee.
Crazylegs and Madison have been away for a bit and we've been slightly down on the line dance front, but this should
change in October when they're back. Still, we're always pleased to have westerners and listeners. Just because you ain't dancing it don't mean you ain't enjoying yourself.
I've been looking after the Fast Draw recently, but I haven't got round to seeing who's Rebels Retreat's
fastest gunslinger. I suspect it's Frosty, but maybe Crazylegs and K2 ain't too far behind! ' And Mule came to see how we were doin' last week, keeping all those in the fast Draw on their toes.
So that's how we are at present – and we're all looking forward to an exciting October, 'cos we've got some
real good artists lined up.
Ciao
Mrs Rusty
