Website Report for March
Hi there, pardners!
It's been great here at Rebels Retreat. Spring is a-coming and we've got a Spring in our step as the numbers attending
keep ever rising.
The first act up was Katie Rhodes, and wasn't she a beaut – young, blonde and vivacious. She certainly wowed the
blokes, and her singing was really good too, and she sang lots of women's Country songs so that the ladies liked her as well. Seems she was touring last year with Heather Myles, and will be again later this
year. Said she made her debut last year, and watched other acts perform trying to be different.
Katie was also good to write from, as she introduced her songs together with the artist who initially sang them – thanks Katie!
That week it was Happy Birthday to Marlene, and Bronco presented her with a framed certificate congratulating her for costing
the Amsterdam police thousands of euros while they looked for car. (She'd forgotten where she'd put it!)
It was Preacher and Nora's birthdays around that time, so they were sung to as well, and a scrummy chocolate cake did the
rounds.
Unfortunately I missed the next Saturday evening. The artist was Ken Durrans. He went down real well – catch you next
time, Ken, when I hope to write a proper report on you.
On 17th March the duo were The Fortyniners. He looked real sharp in a Clint Eastwood-type outfit, and she was dressed all in black with a big hat and red boots.
He, Dave, sang and played the guitar real fancy. She, Wendy, had the genuine Country voice with that edge that makes your
spine tingle. I particularly appreciate songs with stories, and so it was great to hear 'Coward of the County' and 'Don't Take Your Guns to Town' amongst the great renditions they gave.
They had a great sense of humour too, likened Preacher (our DJ) to Bobby Ball – and that was before they knew he was
wearing braces!
Then, 27th March, B.J.Locklin. What can I say that I ain't said in previous reports? A whole entertainment in one little blue-denimed figure. He leapt about the floor, cracked jokes (seem to remember that he said that our people were the best people on the planet, tho' he didn't know which planet!) serenaded selected ladies – and often with a quaver in his voice that reminded me of one of my favourite artists – Dr Hook. (especially in 'It Tears Me Up To See a Grown Man Cry.') Awesome!
And boy is the floor crowded with dancers when he's around!
Last Saturday of the month Gill Williams from Grimsby was our artist. She looked real neat, being slim and wearing a gossamy
black shirt, pale blue jeans with a red belt and white and black leopard spotted sandals showing off her red painted toenails.
She sang loads and loads of songs. Lots of them were Country favourites by favorite female Country singers. Patsy Cline was
the tops with her, and went real good with her authentic-sounding voice. I reckon she's new on the country scene, but should soon be well known if her appearance at Rebels Retreat is anything to go by.
Sad news, our latest caterer, Becky, is leaving the area soon and so has stopped catering for us on Saturday evenings. Thank
you, Becky, for all the real the real good grub we've been enjoying. We wish you lots of luck in your new venture, near Skegness. I'm told. Fortunately Preacher, our Jack of all trades, has discovered a new
caterer for us, and she's real good too.
Even more sad, our friend and member, Jack, has died suddenly. We will always remember the quiet wit and humour of this true
gentleman. Once again The Trilogy merited a four-shot salute.
Well, that's all for now folks,
Talk to you again next month.
Mrs Rusty
