Website Report for April 08

Hi there!

Once again we've has a roller coaster of a month as regards numbers at Rebels Retreat, but we've still got that same atmosphere which means that casual visitors just keep right on coming back.

Still, we did start with a cracker of an act at the beginning of the month – Red Dirt Road! If you want to know about this duo, Kris Davis and Andy Ash, do look at their website , where you can read all about them and even see pictures of our club and some of us! They gave us an especially cheerful night on a night when we were thinking of Preacher's mum, Nora, whose funeral some of us had attended the day before – see report on our website – and Mandy and Preacher had put on a lovely buffet on this night for those who hadn't been able to get to Oldham. It was also a good night because Alice and Shorty celebrated their birthdays with us.

Kris and Andy gave us a really interesting programme, and I particularly liked hearing 'Brand New Girl Friend' and 'If You're Going Through Hell' which reminded me of our holiday in America. During CD time we danced 'The Chrystal Chandeliers' as badly as possible in memory of Nora.

When Jim Fallon came on April 12th there weren't many in, but again we had a really good night. We were sorry to hear that Jim is retiring in July after 54 years – some achievement! Jim is a great entertainer, and he has a brilliant line in chat as well as a wonderful singing voice. He sang some numbers I hadn't heard before like 'Wedding Bells Are Ringing In The Chapel' and 'Wrong,' as well 'Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off' which always makes me laugh!

Rusty and I missed the next Saturday when the artist was Dave Whitmore, all the way from Portsmouth, who went down really well. Looking at his play list see we missed some really good songs like 'Cowboy And The Dancer' and 'Holding Back The Ocean,' as well as some I didn't know, for instance 'High Class Lady' and 'My Heart Skips A Beat.' Catch you next time Dave!

The artist on the last Saturday of the month was that real charmer Richard Palmer. He's young, good looking and sings with great feeling especially songs like 'Love Me' and 'What She's Doing Now.' Richard is versatile performer, playing the guitar and the keyboard and sometimes singing with only backing tracks. Another reason he goes down well at our club is that he has a pleasant line in chat.

The Fast Draw is still going on, and when they are both present Santa and Curly are marshalling. The youngsters are still joining in and they're getting really fast on occasion, so well done to them! They also made up the numbers in the Trilogies on one occasion when we were really short. Meanwhile I have one interesting question – how is it that whoever wins the rhubarb in the raffle it's always Santa who takes it home? Are people hoping for a better Christmas present?

Rebels Retreat is known for greeting strangers, who soon become friends, so do drop in any time you're passing if you haven't been yet.

   Ciao,

     Mrs Rusty
