Website Report for August 08

 Hi there!

Well, that's August come and gone. We'd still be very pleased to get more people coming, but since such a variety of people come – even if not every week – we do have an exciting time! And the guys who do come are real nice people – that's why all the artists want to come back – or maybe they just can't believe how crazy everyone is at The Rebels Retreat (Well, that's what our new sign says over the bar.)

Our first artist of August was Phil Lloyd, who I think I missed last time, but he was a real pleasant guy, and a good Country singer. He has a fine voice and sang some swell numbers, including Don Williams 'Gypsy Woman,' Charlie Landsborough's 'I Will Love You All My Life' and Merle Haggard's 'The Fugitive.' Phil said his hero was George Jones, and he was just about to go and see one of his concerts.

Next up was Kay'D on August 9th. She was real young but obviously has a fine career in front of her. Certainly several people had come to hear her sing – which was good news for us. When I listened to her from outside the room I realised how impressive her voice was. She wore different outfits for each spot, and really threw herself into her singing and playing.

She started with 'Suds In The Bucket,' included songs like The Judds' 'Mama He's Crazy' and 'Blue Kentucky Girl' and ended with 'Lovin' All Night.' (Before the encores!)

August 16th was real special, partly because it was Peter's birthday, and Jenny had arranged a swell buffet for him, and us, to celebrate, and partly because we had a really original duo, The Backroom Boys. They had an authentic back to Country roots sound, and the audience sure appreciated them. One had an electric fiddle and the other a guitar, and they sat together on that stage and made it all look so easy. Amongst songs we don't hear a lot of were 'Keep On The Sunny Side Of life,' 'Big Rock Candy Mountain' and 'Battle Of New Orleans,' and they did a great 'The Devil went Down To Georgia.' Peter looked quite dandy in his birthday cake with candles hat on this special evening.

The next weekend was our August Bank Holiday Roundup – and a report on this will appear on this website soon.

The final Saturday in August was the 30th, when we were visited by Pete James. Pete said he last came 5 years ago, and we sure couldn't think why we hadn't had him again 'cos he was such a great guy. Everybody warmed to him, he was so cheerful, sang with a light, melodious voice and played lead guitar – and told jokes too. What more could we want? The dancers had come out on this night, as had the gunslingers. It was Decker won on this evening, with Kentucky Kate second. Mind you, they'd have to come a whole lot more to win the English Bob Cup, so I guess Frosty is safe.

On one evening this month the only name down for the Fast Draw – I think it was the 9th – was Shorty, but the youngsters came in to give him a good evening. He may not have won, but he sure got plenty of practice in the challenges. Yes, that's what being a Westerner is all about – behaving like true gentlemen (and ladies!) in dealing with other people.

   So long for now,

   Mrs Rusty
