Website Report from Rebels Retreat February 08
Hi there! Greetings from Rebels Retreat!
Yup! We're still here, and still going more or less strong, thanks to our good friends – the visitors – who keep right on coming. And what
a great lot they are, keeping the atmosphere going.
February started off with a great Saturday night on 2nd, thanks to the arrival of our good friend the charming Johnny Holland. He brings along his equally
charming and attractive wife Carol, who is a great line dancer, so between them they certainly keep the punters happy.
With Johnny there's lots of action on the stage and lots of great playing, (including some instrumental snatches), singing and action. Looking at his
list of songs it sure is hard to work out which ones to mention, so here goes, how's about Rocky Lyn's 'Holding Back The Ocean,' Toby Keith's 'I Ain't as Good As I Once Was,' and
Brooks And Dunn's 'Rock My World Little Country Girl.' It was a particularly good night for line dancers – and for the Fast Draw too, since Dinky and Holly joined with the action as well as Carol,
though I can't remember what her Western handle was.
On the next Saturday Goldstryke came along. They've been before, a male/female duo, who make a great team, since their contrasting styles add up to an
interesting whole. He is tall, dresses Western style and with a melodious voice. She is small, dresses all in black and has a raw edge to her voice. They sang loads of songs suitable for line dancing, including
'If I Could Bottle This Up,' (Pity we'd forgotten the dance!) 'Closer,' and 'Modern Day Bonnie And Clyde.'
We were pleased to receive a visit from Preacher and Rusty's Wednesday evening line dance class, especially since it was Rusty's birthday. I see
there were some new virgins in for the Fast Draw challenges, but unfortunately I haven't recorded their names. (since I was wearing a different hat at the time and running the Fast Draw.)
The next Saturday, 16th February Kodi Laine, new to us, burst onto the stage. Dressed all in black, including her hat and guitar, she certainly kept us on
our toes with her up-beat style. She had even brought along a tambourine which she played during some of the songs. Her songs were pure Country, like 'Delta Dawn,' Shania Twain's 'Any Man Of
Mine' and Reba McEntire's 'When.' (sung soulfully and without the guitar.) Once again the line dancers were in their element. The organisers were a bit light on this evening, but thanks to
people who were prepared to double up, especially Marion who (with Wild Bill) ran the raffle, looked after the Fast Draw and then held a flag during the American Trilogy, everything went well.
The last Saturday of the month saw the arrival of the Blood brothers (Chris Hayes and Garry Cooper), a fantastically musical
duo who came in with a plethora of guitars. They had a brilliant programme of songs, many of which I hadn't heard before and so I had to keep my ears peeled so that I could work out the titles. I've noted
Brooks and Dunn's 'Play Something Country' ('She blew though the door like TNT' – which could have been describing the last week's singer, Kodi Laine!), the Western Swing number
'Long Neck Bottle' (Garth Brooks) and Travis Tritts' 'Ten Feet Tall And Bullet Proof.' Towards the end of the evening they sang 'Silk Dresses And Muddy Boots' which it turned out Garry
had co-written and which was nominated for the North Country Magazine song of the year award in 2001.
We may be a small club, but we sure get some classy singers as you'll see from reading through this February line up!
And now we're speeding through March, going headlong towards the Easter Roundup. The committee's planning like mad for what should be a great
weekend, 'cos we've got some great acts lined up: Friday night – Donna Wylde: Saturday night – Indiana Rain: Sunday Night – Jim Ryder and Adam James.
Hopin' to see y'all then,
Mrs Rusty
