Website Report for January 2008

 Hi there!

Well, January has come and gone. There was cold and rain, nights when there weren't many in, and nights when numbers exceeded expectations, but always there was a great atmosphere with everyone enjoying themselves – especially the acts, who always comment on the uniqueness of Rebels Retreat!

Of course, much of this is due to our inimitable DJ, Preacher, who can always be relied upon to come up with a merry quip, or disappear off, or suddenly re-appear behind the bar. Of course the club nights just seem to run like clockwork, mainly because members of the committee just get on with their jobs, for instance Jenny sorts out the raffle, Marlene the takings and the door prizes and Rusty and Preacher the acts: then Mandy, Preacher's partner, keeps everyone well fed and Preacher sorts out the bar staff.

Anyway, back to January. Our first artist was Ivor James. He has an absolutely awesome voice and a wide knowledge of the Country scene. The result was that his programme was full of all sorts of songs new to me, such as George Strait's 'Write This Down' and 'Famous Last Words Of A Fool,' Garth Brooks 'A New Way To Fly' and Dr Hook's 'You Never Got To Hear Those Violins.'

Of course Ivor got to sing 'The American Trilogy,' for us, which Tim McKay was also to do later on in the month.

The next Saturday Jack Daniels arrived, and gave us a good evening of songs, many of them particularly good for line dancing. Jack is always cheerful, and so even though some of our regulars weren't able to come, those who were danced enthusiastically to songs like Waylon Jennings' 'Good Hearted Woman,' Hank Williams' 'Settin' The Woods On Fire' and The Outlaws 'Put Another Log On The Fire.'

Then, just as we were wondering whether numbers would pick up, along came Tim McKay and a creditable audience. Tim was extremely young, good-looking and polite – in fact very reminiscent of the very young Elvis – see the photo on the website if you don't believe me! Tim mixed old and new songs, songs of the 60s with much more modern. So we had Eddy Raven's 'Cowboys Don't Cry,' The Tremeloes' 'Here Comes My Baby,' Lonestar's 'Mr Mom' and of course Elvis's 'Lord You Gave Me A Mountain' (with Tim wearing suitable shades.) He ended without guitar singing Dee Dee King's 'Standing In The Spotlight – magic!

The artist on the last Saturday night in January was Gill Williams, who provided a complete contrast. Gill has an authentic sounding female Country voice and great backing tracks,. So we started with some real soulful songs, like Patsy Cline's 'Strangers In My arms,' Pat Boone's 'Love Letters In The Sand,' and ended the evening with Gill stepping round the stage to more up-beat songs like Crystal Gayle's 'On The Road Again' and Tammy Wynette's 'Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad.'

By the end of the month the committee were feeling more upbeat too, glad to see more people coming in through the doors and hoping that the drier, warmer weather will continue.

I'll let you know how things have been going at the beginning of next month, but if you haven't visited us lately, (or ever), do come along and see for yourself!

   Ciao!
