Website Report for July 08
Hi there!
Well, July sure has been another interesting month. Each week we, the organisers, wonder who will be coming, and each we're pleasantly
surprised – although of course we're some weeks more pleasantly surprised than others!
July started off with Preacher and Mandy on holiday, but you'll be pleased to know that the music played and no one starved. Rusty stood in as
DJ and was able to withstand the banter from the likes of Curly and Santa. Anne-Marie was in charge of the kitchen and we are indebted to her for stepping in. (Me especially, as I might have had to do it!)
Graham Clark was the first artist on July 5th. He was new to us, and I was pleased to find that he was relatively young, with floppy hair and a
really snazzy shirt. There weren't many line dancers in on this and the next week, however Preacher's 'Formation dancers' (or words to that effect) were in and they took a few turns around the floor.
Also Marshal Boozy and Dixie Gal came that week and the next and once again dominated the Fast Draw.
Graham provided us with a really interesting programme, so that there was lots of scope for listening. Amongst his less well known songs were
Dwight Yoakum's 'Thousand Miles From Nowhere,' Hal Ketchum's 'Sure Love' and The Eagles 'Best Of My Love.'
It's a pity that we didn't have so many people in for B.J. the next week when several of our regulars were away, but I do know that even
so some people had come especially to see him. As an entertainer B.J. is absolutely brilliant, as it's difficult to take your eyes off him, or stop listening to his inimitable voice. I'm sure he would have
been pleased to see more line dancers in that week as he always likes to have a go at them, (although he can't be all that serious as he has a nifty pair of feet himself, and never stands still anyway.)
Of course B.J. is a singer songwriter, and on this occasion he sang one of his own compositions, 'Forever In My Arms,' a romantic number.
Apart from that he sang a wide range of songs from 'If The Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets) to 'I'm Much To Young (To Feel This Damn Old)' and even 'Settin' The Woods On Fire.' (I
particularly like the dance to this one!)
This week we were glad that Ron Bacon and his wife were able to visit us. We're always pleased to see old friends and hear how they are
getting on. As regards the raffle, Chantilly won an army cloak and at one point was looking around with a magnifying glass doing a Sherlock Holmes impression. She and Miss Molly also sheltered under the cloak when
B.J. sang 'The Thunder Rolls' as they needed to shelter from the rain!
On July 19th we had yet another new-to-us artist, Pete Walker from Northwich. Pete obviously has a long history of being a musical entertainer,
even though he has only been into Country music for two years. Pete is a talented guitar player, playing lead guitar and also having created his own backing tracks.
He sang some real fine songs, including 'She Wore red Dresses' and 'Please Remember Me,' as well as lots of songs suitable
for line dancing, because yes, once again, the line dancers were in in force. Pete was great with the banter too – which always goes down well with us. We may not have the most crowded club house, but we all
sure have the best time!
On this occasion Alice and Jan joined in the Fast Draw challenges and they both put up a good performance, although Alice was slightly ahead.
We've substituted two new disciplines into the Fast Draw, 6 & 6 and Coffin Draw for 6 & 3 and Freestyle, to try and make things more interesting. The youngsters joining in also adds more interest. Curly
and Santa make real good marshals, but unfortunately they can't come every week.
I missed the last Saturday in July, when Dean Austin came. I'm assured that he gave the usual polished performance. Apparently he predicted
that Burl Ives' 'A Little Bitty Tear' will shortly be a top tune and I'm looking out for that. Anyway, everyone hugely enjoyed themselves.
So that's all for now. See ya at the next Roundup 22nd - 24th August, and don't forget the Air Ambulance Charity Event on 6th and 7th June.
Ciao. Mrs Rusty
