Rebels Retreat Website Report For June 08
Hi there! We've had a pretty short month at Rebels Retreat, what with there only being three Saturday
get-togethers. (The function room was booked by the Bikers for the last Saturday in the month.)
Meanwhile the speaker system in the function room has been up-graded since there are now two speakers at the back as well as at the front – thanks to
Rusty, with help from David – and a disabled toilet has been installed – this time thanks to Rusty and some of the Sterndale Moor Social club personnel.
Anyway, back to the Saturday nights. The singer on 7th June was Ronnie J. Morson, a really committed Country and Western singer, who looked really suave in
his swell oufits which had a truly Western look. He know loads of really interesting songs with great words, including George Strait's 'Overnight Male,' George Jones' 'I Don't Need Your
Rocking Chair' and Johnny Rodriguez' 'Ridin' My Thumb To Mexico.'
The next Saturday the artist was the very professional Alan Westwood. Unfortunately Rusty and I were at a family wedding in the metropolis, but we heard
that he was really good for listeners and was much appreciated. (I remember last time he came Alan sang his own song about Sedona, and so when we went to America we visited Sedona and found it a really beautiful
place.)
On 21st we had another great performer, Billy Stevens. Billy is a great humourist, forever cracking jokes and getting everybody laughing. He is a great
guitarist too, and included in his repetoire lots of line dance songs. We had John Prine's 'Same Thing Happened To Me,' Hal Ketchum's 'Small Town Saturday Night' and Roy Rogers'
'Ghost Riders In The Sky.'
The Fast Draw is still continuing, and I've totted up the scores for the Fast Draw, and seems like Frosty's well ahead with Wild Bill second. Guess
if anyone's going to catch him they're gonna have to do some practising. Mind you we've tried to up the interest by substituting 'coffin draw' and '6 + 6' for 'freestyle' and
'6 + 3.'
We've had some real good costumes coming to the club too, as Shorty and his sister arrived one evening in fabulous Western gear. And then there were the
two Scotsmen in their tartan regalia!
To sum up, maybe the room wasn't full each night, but there was always a real good atmosphere. Billy said that our was one of the nicest clubs he's
visited, and naturally we agree.
See you around!
Ciao,
Mrs Rusty
