Now we come to our Second Rendezvous which took place at Sterndale Moor on the last weekend in May. Our singer was the bubbly Carolann 'B.'
Unfortunately I couldn't note down anything about the first two spots as I was confined to the kitchen with Mandy and mounds of baked potatoes and chilli con
carne. The food was greatly appreciated. It was then that I realised my great mistake, if it had been horrible I'd never be asked to make it again. Whoops!
Carolann is from Rotherham and her father had been a coalminer, so of course she had to sing 'Coal Miner's Daughter,' and 'It's a Working Man' albeit with a Western
twang. Well she is a Country singer! She has a strong voice and can project some raw emotion into her songs.
She has quite a sense of humour too, for when the gunslingers came in she referred to them as, 'The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and the Uglier.' I think I missed
seeing the first one.
On the Saturday, the 28th May, our duo was Westride. What an act! The male half of the duo played while the female sang. She was more a character from the old West than just a singer, and switched from demure cowgirl in a pink suit and boots and brown hat, to Native American complete with chopper, and finally to cowgirl cum saloon girl with black hat and waistcoat, and black skirt lined with blue.
Frosty looked pretty cheerful when she danced with him to Joni Harms 'I Wanna Sing To You' while later on Steve's eyes nearly popped out of his head when she sat on
his knee to sing 'If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body.'
When dressed as a Native American our singer did a fantastic 'Harper Valley PTA' which she sang and acted out. In fact it was her whole facial expression and
actions which really brought all the songs to life and kept the audience spell bound. She wasn't bound by the stage since her mike with the long lead allowed her to wander all over the floor.
The guitarist meanwhile went in for some good guitar picking. I noted this during Joni Harms' 'Here I Go Down That Long Road Again' when I must have managed to tear
my eyes away from the singer.
Mind you, Westride did manage to make sure that our DJ Kalamitty didn't hog the limelight by building up the speakers so that we couldn't see him! Those dancers who
like a hoedown had a great time dancing to 'Y'all Come,' complete with audience participation during the singing.
Tony was presented with 'dog oil' (?) during the evening, though goodness knows why, but nobody was 'shot' like during the last Rendezvous. We had a visit from some
extra gunslingers, including English Bob after whom our Challenge Trophy is named. Our visitors really drew with style, but the winners of the fast draw were our own Frosty (1st) and Bronco, (2nd ).
On Sunday 29th, the last evening of the weekend, the singer was Country Code, a young man from Bolton. (He's the one in black in the photo.) He was fresh faced, enthusiastic and seemed impossibly young! He was very pleasant and had a good voice. I see he sang 'Tougher Than The Rest,' and 'Should've Been a Cowboy.' which I hadn't heard before. He also sang a lot of line dance songs and I got to dance to 'I Might', which doesn't often happen.
During the evening there was a presentation to all the winners of the daytime competitions.
In the last spot Country Code was joined by his friend Darren and they made a good duo, Country Code Mark 2. They sang such songs as 'Who's Your Buddy', (that I
didn't know), and 'Okie From Muskogee,' which always goes down well.
By this time the organisers were all shattered, but we'd again reached the end of a Rendezvous. I must say a big 'Thank You' to all the organisers who worked so
hard, including all those who work behind the scenes so they aren't particularly readily noticed. And of course to Kalamitty our quick thinking DJ. And to Kath who cooked the evening meals. I appreciate her a lot
more now that I've tried it!
We've got some great acts lined up for June, so we hope to see you one day soon at the High Peak CWC.
So long partners,
Mrs Rusty.
