Report For Bank Holiday Weekend August 2005

The idea of the Bank Holiday Weekend was a bit scary as Rusty seemed to have booked quite a lot of campers into the field, and we wondered if everybody would fit into the big room at Sterndale Moor Social Club.

We needn't have worried though, as everybody was squeezed in and there was a terrific atmosphere.

On Friday 26th the artist was Donna Wylde. Donna may be short in stature but she has a big voice. Virtually her first song was 'Ma Vida Loca', which shows that she has our club sorted out. Undaunted even by the likes of Preacher, 'Trouble's in!' she kept everybody entertained with her singing and quick quips.

The Lichfield contingent arrived, along with some other regular visitors, and so we knew we were in for a colourful, if unpredictable, time.

The dancing on Friday night was quite hectic, with a lot of partner swapping going on. In the progressive barn dance I continually found myself without a partner – what were they trying to tell me?

Maybe the highlight of the evening was three of the Lichfielders performing the dance for 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' to the song 'Redneck Woman' with the aid of whips. This went down really well with the males I noticed!

On Saturday we were entertained by that other bundle of energy – Rosa. Rosa knows all the line dances and so not only she sing, but she gives advice on suitable dances as well.

The tone for Saturday night was set by the arrival of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men. They did a few circuits of the room singing 'Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Riding Through The Glen', although without a horse in sight! (It was the Lichfielders again!)

Our DJ Kalamitty is usually very taken with Rosa, but on this occasion was trying to plight his troth with a rather masculine Maid Marian, who spurned his proposal of marriage and left him bewailing that 'she' had toyed with his affections.

On Friday night we had celebrated Curly and Chantilly's wedding anniversary, and on Saturday it was the turn of Rosa's friends Kath and Richard to lead the dancers in a celebratory waltz for their anniversary.

By Sunday night everything was going with a swing. During the day on both Saturday and Sunday there had been opportunities for dancing, although Preacher had spent most of the time playing music to himself (stout fella! – where are the dancers when you need them?), and for the Fast Draw and Western Sports.

The certificates for the latter were given out during Sunday evening, and it was pleasing to note that all the certificates didn't go to our club members.

The artists on Sunday evening were the duo Mel Paul and Mary Lacey. Mary has the bounce and easy charm of the Irish and Mel the skills of a seasoned guitar player. Mary's sister, just over from Belfast, accompanied them on the tambourine in a couple of songs.

Mary was wearing one of her famous garters, and I noticed some of her supporters wearing similar ones on their arms.

During the evening a schoolboy, the duplicate of one of the Lichfielders who was not present at that particular moment, was behaving in an extremely cheeky manner, both behind the bar and in the room.

When informed that unaccompanied children were not allowed in the club he claimed that Mary Lacey was his mother! She denied this and so he had to leave.

Also during the evening there was a ceremony for Linda and Alan, again from Lichfield. Linda was presented with a plastic mac 'nightie' and Alan with a pair of ladies knickers. These they had to don, fortunately over their clothes! Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I missed the significance of this event!

Mel and Mary provided us with a fantastic programme, which peaked on the arrival of 'Polly Darton.' So like the original was this creation by Mary, both in appearance and in voice, that you could really believe that she had arrived straight from Dollywood. A superb end to the evening, and indeed to the whole weekend!

And so thank you to all those who worked so hard to make this weekend such a success, including the artists, our inimitable DJ Kalamitty, Kath who did the food, and the bar staff and of course all those who attended.

       See y'all again soon.
