Hi there! Well, the Easter Roundup for 2006 has been and gone and didn't we have a fantastic time?
The visitors were absolutely fabulous and the committee at the newly named 'Rebels Retreat,' as well as
significant others, absolutely worked their socks off! (Or should it be boots?)
It was great to see the room filled, especially when lots of couples, several of them sensationally dressed in Western gear, took to the floor.
It was a lovely surprise to see Kalamitty and Westie on the Friday evening. Our new resident DJ, Preacher,
was suffering from a rather hoarse voice and so Kalamitty took over for part of the night. However, this didn't stop Preacher from talking, (what could?) and so his throat didn't get quite the rest it might have
done.
Our first act, on Friday 15th, was Double Barrel. These two roly-poly gentlemen had good voices, a
wealth of costumes and went down a storm with the audience who were up and dancing at every opportunity.
They sang some songs I didn't recognise, including Jim Reeves 'Till The Breath In my Body Is Gone' and 'Job Description' from their new album.
On this night it was Alice's birthday and we all got a piece of cake, as we did on Sunday when it was Miss
Molly's birthday. Many Happy Returns to both of them!
On Saturday night we had another duo, a husband and wife team 'Lazy Daisy.' Lazy Daisy have been entertaining
holiday makers in Ibiza for the past thirteen years but are now spending their winters in the UK.
They had a very relaxed style and were good at encouraging audience participation. Preacher was ecstatic when
they sang a gospel medley (which was just perfect for a hoe-down!)
Again we had some interesting songs, including 'The Snowbird,' 'Its Now Or Never' and a medley which included
'Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray.' And as on Friday night the duo went in for changes of costume and there was lots of dancing.
During the evening we were rather startled to see a monkish figure, obviously a 'Father,' looking for his
little boy. This was followed by the appearance of a schoolboy who was behaving in a totally inappropriate manner. (I only hope he didn't get it from his Father!) We gave a sigh of relief when he eventually left.
The artist on Saturday night was one of our all-time favourites, Donna Wylde. Donna is brilliant; she dresses
well, is jolly and chatty, and has a wonderful voice. She often sings the songs of well-known female Country singers.
On this evening she drew attention to the fact that many Country songs are about cheating. She decided that
Gretchen Wilson's 'When I Think About You' was a nice cheating song!
Donna doesn't play an instrument but she does execute dance steps as she sings. This was especially
noticeable during Joni Harms' 'West Texas Waltz.'
One of the highlights of the evening was a progressive barn dance to a medley of songs. It was Donna's idea,
and I soon saw why. Loose women were scurrying up and down the floor looking for partners – at one time I was dancing with another woman – so where did all those men go? (Or maybe they were all dancing together in
another room!)
On a different tack, we were pleased to note that some of the Fast Draw 'virgins' had a go during the
evenings. R. Sole was did particularly well as on Friday evening Rusty provided him with a gun with no bullets and then Frosty gave him one with bullets that had already been fired!
On Sunday afternoon the Western field sports really took off. It was great to see a lot of new faces
collecting certificates in the evening award ceremony. And of course the raffle prizes were up to their usual high standard!
So well done to everybody who contributed to such a successful weekend, not forgetting the bar staff, who
kept us from getting dry, and Alison who did the brilliant breakfasts and suppers and stopped us from starving.
The atmosphere over the whole weekend was really amazing. But as Donna said, "You're all mad here!"
And it's our mad crowd that makes the Rebels Retreat what it is. So do come and join us – there are the May Day and the Whitsun Roundups still to come!
See ya!
