May Bank Holiday Roundup
Hi there!
Well, the second Roundup of the year has taken place, and boy are the committee jiggered! Never mind, it was worth it.
The green outside Sterndale Moor Social Club looked a bit like a resting place for settlers on their way West! We were pleased
to see the Lichfield crowd again as well as several old and new friends. It was great to see so many people in their Western finery, as well as some gunslingers who wouldn't have been out of place at the OK Corral.
We were also pleased to see Bronco and Jackie on Saturday, as Jackie has not been well for a bit. Bronco books the artists.
This weekend they were Alan Westwood on Friday, Rick Lea on Saturday and B.J. Locklin on Sunday.
Alan Westwood sang quite a few songs by the likes of Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson etc. The Rebels were particularly delighted
when he broke into 'The South Will Rise Again.'
Alison, our indefatigable caterer, celebrated her birthday on Friday night, in between officiating in the kitchen. She was kept busy
over the weekend with all the breakfasts and evening meals.
Rick Lea was an artist new to us. He was really cheerful and went around getting people to sing with him. I think that he was trying
out our singing skills! Apart from that he san lots of songs suitable for line dancing, and one action song I particularly like – 'The Drinking Bone.'
On Saturday night I am sad to report that one of Fast Draw 'virgins', R. Soul was tried for the misdemeanour of coming late on
numerous occasions to the club. Despite, or perhaps because of, an impassioned defence by Bronco he was condemned to a fate worse than death. He had to stand still for THREE dances!!!
B.J. Locklin arrived early to set everything up, and we discovered that he was a closet line dancer. (But don't tell anybody.) His
performance at night was absolutely breathtaking and he sang lots of lively stuff, and one or two unusual songs like 'The Devil Danced In Empty Pockets' and 'Dark Brown Eyes and Light Blue Jeans.'
I think of B.J. as a Scottish imp with attitude, and as he pranced around the floor I'm not sure that he wasn't casting a spell on
us! That's if the Banshee-style wails and screams were anything to go by.
On Saturday evening one of the Lichfield lot was shot, I don't know why, but hey, who needs an excuse? At the end of the evening
another was galloping around on a hobby horse!? (see our website pictures.)
As usual everybody was competing to get hold of our fantastic raffle prizes, and Jenny, who is in charge of the raffle skilfully
managed not to sell more than one ticket with each number. Meanwhile our Treasurer kept the money straight and managed to keep smiling as she counted. Thanks to both of them, and to the rest of the workers.
Also to our DJ Preacher kept the music going, where we're not quite sure. Rusty and Curly were much in evidence looking after the
Western Field Sports, and managed to evade the axes and horseshoes etc. They also conducted the Trilogies. There was a fourth shot on Friday night for Ben Rees, a singer known to us who had recently passed away.
Also on Sunday night for Alan, a friend of the Lichfield contingent.
Lyn and Chantilly ran the Fast Draw which took place each evening. There were a nice lot of participants, and the winners were –
1. Rusty 2. Curly (Thumb Bust – Friday)
1. Frosty 2. Sundance (6 and 3 – Saturday)
1. Curly 2. Crazylegs 3. Frosty (Cavalry Twist – Sunday)
The atmosphere at the Roundup was absolutely terrific as the members and visitors all get on together really
well, probably because they're all plumb loco! Each night ended with 'Best Of Friends', and on the Sunday evening Alison took a picture of those present to send to Frosty's Australian relatives who had visited
during the afternoon.
The next Roundup will be the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend at the end of June, so see y'all then.
Ciao!
Mrs Rusty
