Website Report For August Bank Holiday Roundup

Hi there! Well, the Bank Holiday Roundup was awesome! Mind you, how could we go wrong when that fabulous duo, Mel Paul and Mary Lacey, started us off on the Friday night. (Preacher reckoned they were a quartet with all those names!)

If you look at the Roundup pictures on this website you'll see why all the guys like looking at Mary, and even more why they like her sitting on their knees singing 'Happy Birthday' to them. But come on fellas, there weren't as many birthdays as people standing in the queue for their turn! Meanwhile, Mel is always by her side, skilfully playing his guitar and giving us ladies something to look at – a winning combination.

It was great to see lots of our usual visitors coming in through the door as well as some new friends, and everyone was so well-dressed. As usual on a Roundup we wondered whether they would all fit in but they did!

The climax on Friday evening was 'the twins', Mel and Mary's faithful supporters, doing the actions to 'Under The Sun' while some of our Lichfield friends leapt onto the stage and did their own actions, turning Mary into some sort of Indian goddess with many arms for the line, 'while seagulls fly.' There was much hilarity at this point. And by the end of the evening Mary had done an Irish dance and shown her garter!

On Saturday and Sunday afternoons there were the usual Fast Draw Competition and Western Sports. I just have to say that we had some fantastic helpers with willingness and personality, and all the participants entered into the spirit of the occasion, even when one of the targets fell to bits. But I guess Sioux was the most original, tossing an axe through a hole in the board and managing to get a knife to lodge the wrong way round!

On Saturday we were entertained by the male duo 'Double Whiskey,' They'd travelled some way, Bob the singer and guitar player from Cambridge, and Patrick the lead guitarist and keyboard payer from King's Lynn.

There was lots of dancing going on, to songs from 'Trashy Women' (Why did Bob refer to the Norfolk Broads?) to the much newer 'Some Beach, Somewhere,' and Preacher's 'formation dancers' were on the floor as well as Crazylegs and Madison who had returned from holiday. There were a few songs in 'Double Whiskey's' programme I didn't recognise at all, which is always interesting.

On Sunday evening everything climaxed with the arrival of the 'Fortyniners' – Wendy the edgy singer with the authentic Country rasp to her voice and the rangy Dave, the cheery guitar player with the tuneful voice. Dave entered into the Fast Draw as 'The Gambler', and I think he may well have won, with 'Dark Wolf' as second.

There was a real party atmosphere, no doubt partly due to Wendy's party hats, and when Preacher (in his Uncle Sam hat) asked, "What do you think of the show so far?' the enthusiastic roar of 'Rubbish!' showed that all was going more than well.

All the trophies etc were presented by Jenny (pictures again on this website), and Frosty won the Sundown Cup, for the highest total of points in the afternoon Fast Draw competition.

During the weekend the field was awash with caravans, flags etc, so everyone could tell that the Westerners were in town. (or maybe the country!) Two units of Authentic Campers had also arrived – two Confederate officers (Drifter and Bob) and a country wife with her pet (toy!) rat that appeared on Sunday evening. It was very appropriate therefore that Sunday evening ended with the two Trilogies and 'The South Will Rise Again,' when the visiting Confederate officers and their Lone Star Flag joined in.

It would take too long to mention everyone who helped organise the weekend and every one who dropped by, so thanks to all for making the weekend a resounding success. And a big thank you to Linda and Brian who organised the grub, and very fine it was too.

That was the last Roundup this year, so see y'all at the Easter Roundup if not before.

 So long,

 Mrs Rusty
